Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much does it cost to have a cylinder/pump/motor repaired?

It's hard to give an accurate quote without being able to physically inspect the item and being able to see what the problem might be. An inspection fee is the norm and if authorization is given for a repair, it will be included in the cost of the repair. Repair pricing starts at about $350 and go up depending on what is found upon inspection.

  • Do you repair [Brand Name] units?

As long as your item is an American made item we should be able to acquire parts to complete a repair. Units that were manufactured cheaply were done so for replacability rather than repairs and often parts for these can't be acquired.

  • Can I have my hose made here?

We solely stock hydraulic hose from 1/4" to 1-1/4" in size. We can fabricate a brand new hose for you but we can't splice/patch, shorten, or crimp a new end on an existing hose.

  • How long will it take for you to repair my cylinder/pump/motor?

Turn around time for repairs on cylinders, pumps, and motors varies on our workload, give us a call or send us an email for an accurate time frame.

  • Do I need to replace the oil in my hydraulic system?

Hydraulic oil is just like the oil in your truck or car, just for hydraulic equipment and like your vehicle's oil it needs to be changed regulary. The folks at Hydraulic Distributors say it best here.

  • Do I need to set up an appointment or can I just walk in?

Either way works for us, if you want to call us, 515-265-1453, or send us an email, info@hqihydraulics.com, to let us know that you'll be planning on coming in, that is great. If you are in the area and suddenly want to stop in, we will be glad to assist you.

  • Do you repair hydraulic jacks?

We are no longer repairing hydraulic jacks.

  • Is warranty offered?

Yes, we offer a 90 day warranty on repairs. For any new items that you may purchase from us, we offer the warranty that the manufacture offers. If you bring us a unit that has damage that you choose not to have repaired (ex. a damaged rod) or replaced,

  • Can you do a service call to our job site?

Describe the item or answer the question so that site visitors who are interested get more information. You can emphasize this text with bullets, italics or bold, and add links.
  • Do you stock steal kits or repair kits?

We do not stock seal kits on our shelves, but we do stock a large inventory of seals that we can put together a seal kit from. We do ask that if you're looking for a seal kit that you bring in the old seals, the rod, the piston, and the gland so we can accurately size everything up and give you the correct seals.

  • Can you test hydraulic equipment in your shop?

We do have the capability to test cylinders. We don't test pumps and motors prior to repair due to the risk of the units contaminating our test system. We can test them once we have repaired the unit.

  • Can I use ATF in my cylinder/jack/pump/motor?

We reccomend that you only use standard hydraulic oil or the oil that the manufacture of your unit recommends. Fluids like ATF are corrosive to hydraulic seals and hoses.

  • What parts do you stock?

We stock standard seals, adapter fittings, chrome rod, and hoses. Due into an increase in demand we've also stock some metric seals, chrome rod, and adapter fittings.

  • Why can't you repair hoses?

The primary reason that we don't repair hose is due to liability risks. There are many different manufactures of hydraulic hose and fittings, Eaton, Gates, Parker, Ryco, etcetra, and each manufacture has different crimp specifications for their ends to properly crimp onto the hose. Hoses are exposed to a dirty enviroment; dirt, oil, and other detritus bond with the hose and create a surface that the end is unable to crimp securely crimp onto. Once this happens, you face the risk of having the hose end blow off and damage equipment or injure someone.

  • Can a bent chrome rod be straightened?

No, a bent rod can not be straightened out and reused.

  • Does my NPT fitting need pipe tape?

Pipe tape is mainly used as a lubricant not a sealant. If you plan on using it we reccomend that you apply it one-two threads back from the tip of the fitting and only wrap it around three times.
